In the Age of Ancients the world was unformed, shrouded by fog. A land of grey crags, Archtrees and Everlasting Dragons. But then there was Fire and with fire came disparity. Heat and cold, life and death, and of course, light and dark. Then from the dark, They came, and found the Souls of Lords within the flame. Nito, the First of the Dead, The Witch of Izalith and her Daughters of Chaos, Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight, and his faithful knights. And the Furtive Pygmy, so easily forgotten.

With the strength of Lords, they challenged the Dragons. Gwyn's mighty bolts peeled apart their stone scales. The Witches weaved great firestorms. Nito unleashed a miasma of death and disease. And Seath the Scaleless betrayed his own, and the Dragons were no more.

Thus began the Age of Fire. But soon the flames will fade and only Dark will remain. Even now there are only embers, and man sees not light, but only endless nights. And amongst the living are seen, carriers of the accursed Darksign.

Yes, indeed. The Darksign brands the Undead. And in this land, the Undead are corralled and led to the north, where they are locked away, to await the end of the world... This is your fate.

Only, in the ancient legends it is stated, that one day an undead shall be chosen to leave the undead asylum, in pilgrimage, to the land of ancient lords, Lordran.

And so, as the dragons are destroyed, the age of ancients comes to a close and the age of fire begins. It is at this time that the furtive pygmy, one of the bearers of the great souls, disappears before the time of the chosen undead. Very little is revealed about this furtive pygmy throughout the game, although we do encounter him in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, in the form of the enemy Manus, the father of the abyss. But how did this come to be, that the weak, defenceless pygmy became so powerful and uncontrollable, creating the abyss and causing the destruction of Oolacile?

The Soul of Manus, gained from killing the boss, reveals some crucial information. The description of the item reads, “Soul of Manus, Father of the Abyss. This extraordinary soul is a viscous, lukewarm lump of humanity. Ancient Manus was clearly once human. But he became the father of the abyss after his humanity went wild, eternally seeking his broken pendant.”

From this we can make a few statements central to this video.

Manus was definitely originally human. This is supported by the quote, “Ancient Manus was clearly once human.” Also, the Dark Soul of Mankind, the one that Manus possesses, is clearly based on a humanity sprite gone wild.

The Chasm of the Abyss, for the purpose of this video, is potentially the same abyss found in New Londo, as Oolacile is likely an early incarnation of Darkroot Garden and Darkroot Basin.

Humanity can be manipulated by powerful feelings and emotions. This is supported by the item description of Pursuers, which reads, “Grant a fleeting will to the dark of humanity, and volley the result. The will feels envy, or perhaps love, and despite the inevitably trite and tragic ending, the will sees no alternative, and is madly driven towards its target.” From this we can start to form a reasoning for Manus as we see him, in his powerful form that so exceeds the abilities of the furtive pygmy he was before. For, after searching for his broken pendant for so long he was fuelling his rage.

The events of Oolacile and the Chasm of the Abyss take place long before the base game's events, as evidenced by Elizabeth, who says, “Thou art come from a time far ahead.”

The Primordial Serpent, Darkstalker Kaathe, is a key part of the furtive pygmy's story, for he is indirectly to blame for the destruction of Oolacile, the creation of the abyss and all the events that took place afterwards. It is hinted that he is the one who caused the townspeople to awaken the pygmy. According to Hawkeye Gough, one of Gwyn's four knights, the pygmy flew into a rage, seeking out his broken pendant. We mentioned before that humanity can be manipulated by strong emotions and the same is true in this case, although there is one key difference.

Manus has the ultimate source of humanity. The Dark Soul.

As his rage exploded, so did his power. He laid waste to the once prosperous Oolacile township and transformed it's townspeople into horrific mutants. Artorias was sent by Lord Gwyn to put an end to the Age of Dark Manus wished to bring forth before it could begin, but he was defeated by Manus and his abyss sorceries. In his dying moments, Artorias used his shield to protect his companion, Sif the Great Grey Wolf, trapping her in a protective shield until someone worthy was able to save her and hopefully defeat Manus. Artorias was claimed by the abyss, driven insane until he becomes as you fight him – corrupt and drained of all empathy. He is but a killing force where before he was a noble knight.

When the Chosen Undead kills Manus, they are not credited for it. It is not remembered as the day the Chosen Undead slew Manus but rather as the day Artorias, the Abyss Traveller, slew the Father of the Abyss.



And so is your legacy, Chosen Undead.
